The Esslingen Medieval Market & Christmas Market (Mittelaltermarkt & Weihnachtsmarkt) is one of Germany's most distinctive holiday events, uniquely blending a traditional Christmas market with a fully immersive medieval experience set against the backdrop of Esslingen am Neckar's remarkably preserved half-timbered Old Town. Spread across the Marktplatz, Rathausplatz, Hafenmarkt, and surrounding historic squares, the combined market features approximately 180 stalls and around 500 cultural programme events across four pre-Christmas weeks. The Christmas market section offers over 80 stalls showcasing handmade goods including classic Christmas ornaments, nativity figures, miniature clay tealight houses, nostalgic toys, felt hats, natural clothing, furs, and jewelry — alongside a beloved 1905 Art Nouveau nostalgic carousel and a hands-on candle workshop. On Advent weekends, more than 30 additional artisans set up in the Ritterstraße for the rotating Advent Market, making repeat visits worthwhile. The medieval section transports visitors back in time with costumed merchants, period craftsmen demonstrating ancient trades, fire artists, stilt walkers, jugglers, acrobats, and live medieval music performed daily on four stages. Workshops in archery, medieval dance, costume-making, and metalsmithing give visitors an interactive experience rarely found at other Christmas markets. Children can watch a living nativity scene at the Postmichel Fountain Christmas Island and drop letters to the Christkind in a special wish mailbox. Food highlights include hearty Bratwurst, Käsespätzle, mulled Glühwein, sweet mead, berry juice, cinnamon rolls, roasted almonds, and waffles. The market runs daily from 11:00 am, with extended hours on Fridays and Saturdays until 9:30 pm. Arriving by S-Bahn Line S1 from Stuttgart (approximately 15–20 minutes) and walking 10 minutes from the station is the easiest and most recommended approach.
