The Esslingen Medieval Market & Christmas Market at Hafenmarkt is one of Germany's most atmospheric holiday events, transporting visitors back in time against a backdrop of medieval half-timbered houses in Esslingen am Neckar's historic Old Town. The Hafenmarkt square serves as one of several interconnected market zones, featuring additional vendor stalls and the beloved Märchenzelt — a fairytale tent offering free storytelling performances for children and adults alike, no reservation required. Spread across multiple Old Town squares, the combined market draws visitors with approximately 180 stalls and around 500 cultural programme events across four pre-Christmas weeks. At Hafenmarkt and the surrounding areas, costumed merchants, period-dressed craftsmen, fire artists, stilt walkers, jugglers, and acrobats perform daily on multiple stages. Artisan workshops invite hands-on participation — visitors can try medieval dance, archery, juggling, candle-making, and even metalsmithing alongside skilled craftspeople. The market's traditional Christmas section offers over 80 stalls selling handcrafted ornaments, nativity figures, clay tealight houses, felt hats, natural clothing, furs, and jewelry. On Advent weekends, more than 30 additional artisans set up in the Ritterstraße for the rotating Adventsmarkt. Food highlights include Käsespätzle, Bratwurst, Glühwein, sweet mead, and freshly baked cinnamon rolls. The market runs daily from 11:00 am to 8:30 pm, with extended hours until 9:30 pm on Fridays and Saturdays — evenings are especially magical when twinkling lights and live medieval music fill the air.
