Getting There

Nördlingen is accessible by car via the Romantic Road, which passes directly through the town and connects to larger cities including Augsburg and Würzburg. Munich and Stuttgart airports are each roughly two hours away by car. Regional train services link Nördlingen to Augsburg, with onward connections to the national rail network available from there.

Where to Stay

The circular old town within the medieval walls places visitors within walking distance of the central market square and main attractions. Small family-run hotels and guesthouses in the historic core offer atmospheric accommodation, with the compact Altstadt layout making nearly everything accessible on foot.

Other Attractions

The medieval town walls are among Germany's best-preserved, with a complete walking circuit offering sweeping views over rooftops and the surrounding Ries crater landscape. The Church of St. George, a late Gothic structure dominating the town center, features a tower climb for panoramic regional views. The Rieskrater Museum explores the geological significance of Nördlingen's location within one of the world's most clearly defined meteorite impact craters. The Stadtmuseum documents the town's civic and cultural heritage across centuries.

History & Culture

Nördlingen received its town charter in the thirteenth century and developed into a prosperous free imperial city during the medieval period, benefiting from its position on important trade routes. Its remarkably intact circular fortifications, built largely in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, have survived nearly undisturbed, creating a rare sense of medieval completeness. The town sits within the Nördlinger Ries, a vast impact crater formed by meteorite strike approximately fifteen million years ago. This geological feature shaped the local landscape and building materials—suevite stone from the crater was used extensively in construction. Nördlingen witnessed a decisive battle of the Thirty Years' War in 1634, an event that left a lasting regional mark. Today it stands as one of Germany's finest examples of a preserved medieval settlement. The town's Christmas market, held on the historic Marktplatz and overlooked by St. George's Church tower, creates a visually striking Advent setting. The tradition draws on centuries of market culture from when the town was a thriving imperial trading center, and the intimate scale gives it distinctly local character.
