The Romantischer Weihnachtsmarkt Nördlingen transforms the medieval Marktplatz and surrounding historic old town into one of the most atmospheric Christmas markets in Swabia, spreading its festive charm across more than 70 beautifully decorated stalls. Set within Nördlingen's remarkably preserved medieval city walls — themselves built on the rim of a 15-million-year-old meteor crater — the market offers a backdrop unlike any other in Germany, with the soaring Gothic tower of St. George's Church, known as 'Daniel,' watching over the festivities. Visitors can browse stalls offering high-quality artisan crafts, handmade gifts, and seasonal decorations, while the air fills with the irresistible scent of mulled wine, roasted almonds, and grilled sausages. The market extends to the historic Kornschrannen (old corn warehouse), adding extra space and character to the experience. A rich program of events runs throughout the season, including the beloved Nördlinger Krippenweg — a nativity scene trail winding through the old town — evening tower climbs up the Daniel tower on Fridays and Saturdays, nativity exhibitions in the Rathausgewölbe, guided Advent city tours, and daily Christmas concerts at the Alte Schranne. Children delight in the traditional carousel, a mini train ride, and a daily fairy-tale hut with storytelling sessions. Every Tuesday, the market is lit exclusively by candlelight, creating an especially magical atmosphere. Open daily from late November through December 23, the market is best experienced at dusk when the golden glow of lights illuminates the half-timbered facades and medieval streets.
