Christmas Markets in Kassel

Kassel's origins stretch back over a thousand years, developing as a significant seat of power for the Landgraves of Hesse from the medieval period onward. The Landgraves invested heavily in architecture, gardens, and the arts, leaving a legacy visible in the grand Wilhelmshöhe landscape. The city is most famously associated with Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, who worked here in the early nineteenth century and compiled their celebrated collection of fairy tales partly from stories gathered in the Hessian countryside. Though Kassel suffered significant destruction during the Second World War, it was rebuilt and has since reinvented itself as a city of culture and contemporary art.
