Plan Your Visit to Kassel

Getting There

Kassel is well connected by rail, with Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe station serving major intercity routes to Frankfurt, Hanover, and Berlin. Travelers flying into Frankfurt Airport can reach the city by train in approximately one hour. The city is also accessible by car via the A7 motorway, which runs north to south through central Germany.

Where to Stay

The city center puts visitors within easy walking distance of the main market areas and shopping streets around Königsplatz. The area around Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe station offers convenient accommodation for those arriving by train and wishing to explore both the city and the palace park.

Other Attractions

Kassel is home to the Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring a dramatic hillside landscape, cascades, and the Hercules monument overlooking the city. The Wilhelmshöhe Palace within the park houses an impressive collection of Dutch and Flemish Old Masters at the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister. The Grimmwelt museum offers a thoughtful tribute to the Brothers Grimm, who spent formative years in Kassel and drew on the surrounding region for their famous tales. Art enthusiasts will recognize Kassel as the home of documenta, the internationally renowned contemporary art exhibition held every five years.

History & Culture

Kassel's origins stretch back over a thousand years, developing as a significant seat of power for the Landgraves of Hesse from the medieval period onward. The Landgraves invested heavily in architecture, gardens, and the arts, leaving a legacy visible in the grand Wilhelmshöhe landscape. The city is most famously associated with Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, who worked here in the early nineteenth century and compiled their celebrated collection of fairy tales partly from stories gathered in the Hessian countryside. Though Kassel suffered significant destruction during the Second World War, it was rebuilt and has since reinvented itself as a city of culture and contemporary art.
