Plan Your Visit to Regensburg

Getting There

Regensburg is well connected by rail, with frequent direct trains from Munich taking roughly 90 minutes, making it an easy day trip or overnight destination from Bavaria's capital. Travelers flying into Munich Airport can reach the city by a combination of S-Bahn and regional rail services. By road, Regensburg sits at the junction of major autobahn routes, making it accessible by car from across southern Germany and neighboring Austria.

Where to Stay

Staying within or immediately adjacent to the Altstadt places visitors within easy walking distance of the city's main sights. Boutique hotels and guesthouses in the old town offer atmospheric bases, while larger hotels near the main train station provide convenient access for those arriving by rail.

Other Attractions

Regensburg's UNESCO-listed old town is one of the best-preserved medieval city centers in Europe, anchored by the soaring twin towers of St. Peter's Cathedral, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. The Stone Bridge, a 12th-century structure spanning the Danube, remains one of the oldest intact bridges in Germany and offers striking views of the historic skyline. The Old Town Hall complex houses a museum where visitors can explore the former Imperial Diet chambers. The Danube invites leisurely walks along its banks, and the nearby Walhalla memorial temple, perched above the river a short distance east, is worth the excursion.

History & Culture

Regensburg's origins stretch back nearly two millennia, founded as the Roman legionary fortress of Castra Regina around 179 AD under Emperor Marcus Aurelius. Its position on the Danube made it a vital trading hub throughout the medieval period, and by the 12th and 13th centuries it was one of the wealthiest cities in the Holy Roman Empire. The city's architectural heritage survived the Second World War largely intact, preserving a dense concentration of Romanesque and Gothic buildings that give Regensburg an almost unaltered medieval character. For centuries, the Imperial Diet convened here, cementing the city's role as a center of European political life. Regensburg has hosted Christmas markets in its historic old town for generations, with the cathedral square and surrounding medieval lanes providing a natural backdrop for seasonal celebration.
