Regensburg's Christkindlmarkt at Neupfarrplatz is one of Germany's most storied Christmas markets, with origins dating back to around 1790 and a setting that few markets can rival. Surrounding the historic Protestant Neupfarrkirche church in the heart of Regensburg's UNESCO World Heritage-listed medieval old town, this beloved market has been recognized by an independent jury as one of the ten most beautiful Christmas markets in the entire German-speaking world. The market runs from late November through December 23, with stalls open Sunday through Wednesday from 10 am to 8 pm and Thursday through Saturday from 10 am to 9 pm. The opening ceremony, traditionally presided over by the mayor at the Alte Wache, features a highlight appearance by the Regensburg Christkindl, performances by the world-renowned Regensburger Domspatzen boys' choir, brass ensembles, and a visit from St. Nicholas who distributes sweets to children. Every Wednesday is Children's Day, with discounted carousel rides and two daily St. Nicholas appearances at 2 pm and 4 pm. Food lovers will find exclusively artisan-crafted products, including the iconic Original Regensburger Bratwürste and the dramatic half-meter-long Regensburger sausage. Glühwein flows freely alongside other regional specialties. Shoppers can browse stalls offering handcrafted straw stars, glass Christmas ornaments, quality leather goods, gloves, and seasonal floral wreaths. Each evening from 6 pm, the Neupfarrkirche is romantically illuminated with energy-efficient LED lighting, casting a warm glow over the entire square. Live music performances, particularly on Friday and Saturday afternoons, complete the festive atmosphere. Arrive on a weekday to enjoy the market at a relaxed pace and take advantage of Children's Day discounts if visiting with family.
