The Villacher Advent market around the Stadtpfarrkirche is one of Carinthia's most atmospheric Christmas celebrations, set beneath the illuminated tower of Villach's iconic parish church, which glows like a giant candle above the old town rooftops. Running from mid-November through December 31, with select huts open until January 6, this traditional market transforms the historic church square into a festive wonderland of light, music, and seasonal cheer. Around 30 carefully curated exhibitors surround the church with wooden huts offering handmade gifts, regional crafts, and culinary specialties. The scent of mulled wine, roasted chestnuts, and cinnamon fills the air as visitors browse stalls selling locally made ornaments, artisan goods, and traditional Carinthian products. A spectacular illuminated canopy (Baldachin) stretches over the adjacent ice skating rink at Rathausplatz, adding a magical visual centerpiece to the entire Advent zone. The market is rich with programming throughout the season. Highlights include a festive opening ceremony on November 14 with choral singing inside the Stadtpfarrkirche, a dramatic Krampus procession featuring over 55 groups and 1,000 Krampus figures, a Farmers' Advent market, and weekly choral and ensemble performances at multiple squares. A brand-new attraction allows visitors to climb the highest church tower in Carinthia for panoramic views over the glittering old town for just €5. Children enjoy a cookie-decorating paradise, pony station, carousel, children's train, and Christmas post office. Plan to arrive on a weekend afternoon to catch live musical performances and soak in the full festive atmosphere of this beloved Villach Christmas market.
