The Villacher Advent transforms Villach's historic old town into a glittering wonderland each Advent season, spreading across multiple iconic locations including the Hauptplatz, Rathausplatz, Nikolaiplatz, and the squares surrounding the Stadtpfarrkirche. The illuminated church tower — the tallest in all of Carinthia — glows like a giant candle above the rooftops, serving as the unmistakable centerpiece of this beloved Carinthian Christmas market. With over 60 rustic huts, the Villacher Advent offers a rich blend of regional culinary delights, handcrafted gifts, and festive atmosphere. Visitors can browse artisan stalls for locally made crafts and Christmas decorations, warm up with mulled wine and roasted chestnuts, and soak in the scent of cinnamon and fresh-baked cookies drifting through the old town streets. The market runs from mid-November through December 31, with select huts continuing into early January. The event calendar is packed with highlights: a ceremonial opening with choir performances inside the Stadtpfarrkirche, the spectacular Krampuslauf featuring over 55 groups and more than 1,000 Krampus figures parading through the inner city, the traditional Villacher Bauernadvent, and a full schedule of choral and ensemble concerts at multiple outdoor stages. Families will find dedicated children's activities including a cookie-decorating workshop, pony station, children's train, carousel, Christmas post office, and an ice skating rink at the Rathausplatz.
