Plan Your Visit to Mainz

Getting There

Mainz is well connected by rail, with Frankfurt am Main serving as the nearest major international airport, approximately 30 minutes away by regional train. The city sits at the confluence of the Rhine and Main rivers, making it easily accessible by road from Frankfurt, Cologne, and other major German cities. Mainz Hauptbahnhof offers frequent intercity connections throughout Europe.

Where to Stay

The Altstadt places visitors within easy walking distance of the cathedral quarter and the city's central spaces. Hotels along the Rhine waterfront and near Hauptbahnhof offer convenient access to public transport and the pedestrianized old town.

Other Attractions

The Cathedral of Saint Martin, a magnificent Romanesque structure at the heart of the old town, dominates the skyline with centuries of architectural detail. The Gutenberg Museum, dedicated to Johannes Gutenberg and the history of printing, stands as one of Germany's most distinctive cultural institutions. The old town's winding lanes feature half-timbered houses and traditional wine taverns, while the Rhine promenade offers scenic walks with views across to Wiesbaden. Mainz serves as a gateway to the Rheingau wine region, making it an excellent base for exploring some of Germany's finest Riesling vineyards.

History & Culture

Mainz traces its origins to a Roman military camp established around 13 BCE, known as Mogontiacum, which grew into one of the most important Roman settlements north of the Alps. During the medieval period, it became a powerful ecclesiastical center and home to one of the Holy Roman Empire's most influential archbishoprics. Johannes Gutenberg, born here around 1400, invented movable-type printing in the mid-fifteenth century, fundamentally transforming human communication and knowledge. The city suffered considerable destruction during the Second World War but has carefully preserved and restored much of its historic core. Its position on the Rhine has long made it a crossroads of trade and culture, lending the city a cosmopolitan character that persists today. The cathedral square has hosted Advent celebrations for generations, with the market evolving into one of the most beloved in the Rhine-Main region, where Romanesque stonework and candlelit stalls create a sense of historical continuity.
