Explore the magical atmosphere of Speyer's Christmas markets
Speyer is one of Germany's oldest cities, with roots stretching back to a Roman settlement established around the first century AD. Through the medieval period it grew into a significant imperial city, hosting numerous Imperial Diets and serving as a seat of ecclesiastical and political power along the Rhine. The great cathedral, begun in the eleventh century under Emperor Conrad II, became a symbol of Salian dynastic ambition and remains the largest surviving Romanesque church in the world. Speyer's Jewish community, among the oldest in the German-speaking world, left a profound cultural legacy visible in the preserved medieval structures of the old Jewish quarter. The city's layered history—Roman, medieval, imperial, and religious—gives it a depth that distinguishes it from many of its Rhine Valley neighbors. The Christmas market tradition is rooted in Speyer's long history as a gathering place for trade and civic life along the Rhine, centered on the cathedral square and drawing on the city's medieval character.

Held annually in front of Europe's largest Romanesque church, the Imperial Cathedral of Speyer, this beloved Christmas and New Year's market stretches along the historic Maximilianstraße all the way to the medieval Altpörtel city gate. One of the few German Christmas markets that remains open through the New Year, it features festively decorated stalls, Glühwein, regional food, a vintage carousel, a children's program, and a spectacular New Year's Eve celebration with fireworks. The market also includes the Kunsthandwerkermarkt (artisans market) in the town hall courtyards and the Weihnachtsmarkt der Partnerstädte (Twin Cities Market) on all four Advent weekends.
