Mainzer WinterZeit

The Mainzer WinterZeit is Mainz's network of four neighborhood-style Christmas markets spread across the city center, each with its own distinct character and charm. Together they attracted 416,000 visitors in 2024, making them a beloved complement to the city's grand Historic Christmas Market at the cathedral. The four locations — Schillerplatz, Bahnhofsvorplatz (main train station forecourt), Hopfengarten, and the Schloss-Innenhof (Electoral Palace courtyard) — offer visitors a more intimate, local atmosphere compared to the larger cathedral market. Schillerplatz, set around Mainz's famous Fastnacht fountain, is a cozy gathering spot for friends and families with warming drinks and festive snacks. The Hopfengarten, tucked at the end of Augustinerstraße, transforms into a winter oasis with creative mulled drinks and a children's carousel. The Schloss-Innenhof brings a romantic, historic backdrop inside the courtyard of the Electoral Palace. The Bahnhofsvorplatz market is perfectly positioned for a festive stop before or after your train journey, and uniquely stays open until 10 pm daily — the latest of all Mainz markets. Three of the four locations extend their season into late December (December 27–30), giving visitors extra days to soak up the atmosphere after Christmas. A popular way to explore all the markets is the GlühWeinWalk ticket (€26), which includes mulled wine, mulled gin, and Christmas snacks at participating stalls across the entire Christmas city. Family Sunday on December 14 features special children's activities at all WinterZeit locations.
