Getting There

Odense is well connected by rail and sits on Denmark's main line between Copenhagen and Jutland. Frequent intercity trains run from Copenhagen Central Station in approximately 90 minutes. Travelers arriving at Copenhagen Airport can take direct train services to Odense. Those driving from Germany or southern Jutland can reach the city via the E45 motorway and the Great Belt Bridge.

Where to Stay

The city center and the area around the main train station offer the most convenient base for exploring Odense on foot. A range of accommodation from boutique hotels to larger properties can be found within the inner city. The compact scale of Odense means that almost any central location keeps key attractions within easy reach.

Odense is the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen, and the Hans Christian Andersen Museum offers an immersive exploration of the author's life and literary legacy. The Funen Village, an open-air museum on the southern edge of the city, recreates rural Danish life from past centuries. Saint Canute's Cathedral is a fine example of Danish Gothic architecture, notable for its medieval interior and royal connections. The compact old town rewards leisurely walking, with well-preserved merchant houses and a lively café culture centered around pedestrianized streets.

History & Culture

Odense is one of the oldest cities in Denmark, with roots stretching back more than a thousand years. Its name derives from Odin's Vi, meaning the shrine of Odin, reflecting its significance as a place of Norse worship before Christianity. The city grew in medieval importance as a religious center, and the martyrdom and subsequent canonization of King Canute IV in the late eleventh century established Odense as a pilgrimage destination of considerable standing in northern Europe. By the nineteenth century, Odense had gained international fame as the hometown of Hans Christian Andersen, whose fairy tales brought the city enduring recognition. This literary heritage remains central to Odense's identity.
