Plan Your Visit to Lyon

Getting There

Lyon is served by Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport, approximately 25 kilometers east of the city center, with direct flights from major European cities and tram connections to the city. The city is a major hub on France's high-speed TGV rail network, with frequent connections from Paris, Marseille, and Geneva. Lyon is also accessible by motorway from Switzerland, Italy, and other French regions.

Where to Stay

The Presqu'île district, situated between the Rhône and Saône rivers, offers central access to markets and shopping streets, with accommodation ranging from boutique hotels to international chains. Vieux Lyon provides atmospheric lodging in historic buildings near the cathedral and Renaissance quarter. The Part-Dieu area offers modern hotels with convenient transport links for train arrivals.

Other Attractions

Lyon's UNESCO-listed Old Town features Renaissance traboules, hidden passageways winding through historic buildings in the Vieux Lyon quarter. The city is renowned as France's gastronomical capital, with traditional bouchons serving local specialties and a vibrant culinary scene. The Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière offers panoramic views over the city. The Musée des Confluences and Musée des Beaux-Arts house significant art and cultural collections. The Fête des Lumières, held each December, transforms the city into a light art installation drawing visitors from across Europe.

History & Culture

Lyon was founded as Lugdunum by the Romans in 43 BCE and became the capital of Gaul, a strategic crossroads where major trade routes converged. The city flourished during the Renaissance as a center of silk weaving and international banking, with Italian merchants establishing the traboule passages still visible today. Lyon's position at the confluence of two rivers made it a natural commercial hub, and its tradition of craftsmanship and trade fairs dates back centuries.

The city's culinary reputation grew from its role as a meeting point between northern and southern French traditions, while its silk industry brought wealth and cultural sophistication that shaped its elegant architecture. Lyon's Fête des Lumières originated in 1852 when residents placed candles in their windows to honor the Virgin Mary. This tradition evolved into a contemporary festival blending religious heritage with modern light installations, establishing Lyon's unique winter celebration that reflects its artisanal and cultural legacy.
