Obernai is most easily reached via Strasbourg, which has regular TGV high-speed train connections from Paris and other major French cities. From Strasbourg, regional trains and buses connect to Obernai in under an hour. By car, the town is well positioned along the Alsace Wine Route with straightforward access from the A35 motorway.

Where to Stay

Staying in or near Obernai's historic centre puts visitors within easy walking distance of the main square and local attractions. The town is compact, so centrally located hotels and chambres d'hôtes offer genuine convenience. Those seeking more space can find comfortable options in surrounding villages along the Wine Route.

Other Attractions

Obernai's medieval old town features well-preserved half-timbered houses, the distinctive six-bucket well on Place du Marché, and the Gothic tower of the Chapelle Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul. The Hôtel de Ville and the Kappelturm belfry are among the town's most recognizable landmarks. The Alsace Wine Route offers excellent opportunities for cellar visits and tastings at local producers. Mont Sainte-Odile, a hilltop convent with panoramic views, makes for a rewarding half-day excursion from town.

History & Culture

Obernai is one of Alsace's oldest towns, with roots stretching back to the early medieval period. It was the birthplace of Sainte Odile, the patron saint of Alsace, whose legacy continues to shape the region's cultural and spiritual identity. The town flourished as a free imperial city during the Middle Ages, and much of its architectural heritage—ramparts, towers, and timbered facades—dates from this prosperous era.

Alsace's complex history, passing between French and German sovereignty over centuries, left Obernai with a distinctly hybrid culture evident in its language, cuisine, and architecture. This layered identity gives the town an authenticity that distinguishes it from more generic destinations.

Obernai's Christmas market is rooted in deep Alsatian Advent traditions dating back centuries, where Germanic and French customs intertwined to create distinctive festive culture. Centered on Place du Marché, the market benefits from medieval surroundings that lend historical continuity. It has gained a reputation as a more intimate alternative to larger regional markets, drawing visitors who seek a quieter, village-scale experience.
