Explore the magical atmosphere of Obernai's Christmas markets

Obernai is one of Alsace's oldest towns, with roots stretching back to the early medieval period. It was the birthplace of Sainte Odile, the patron saint of Alsace, whose legacy continues to shape the region's cultural and spiritual identity. The town flourished as a free imperial city during the Middle Ages, and much of its architectural heritage—ramparts, towers, and timbered facades—dates from this prosperous era.
Alsace's complex history, passing between French and German sovereignty over centuries, left Obernai with a distinctly hybrid culture evident in its language, cuisine, and architecture. This layered identity gives the town an authenticity that distinguishes it from more generic destinations.
Obernai's Christmas market is rooted in deep Alsatian Advent traditions dating back centuries, where Germanic and French customs intertwined to create distinctive festive culture. Centered on Place du Marché, the market benefits from medieval surroundings that lend historical continuity. It has gained a reputation as a more intimate alternative to larger regional markets, drawing visitors who seek a quieter, village-scale experience.

Obernai's flagship Christmas event, the Market of Gastronomy and Crafts features 45 chalets spread across 5 squares in the historic city center, running from late November through December 31. The market is celebrated for its authentic Alsatian atmosphere, local gastronomic specialties including foie gras, gingerbread, bredeles, and Christmas beer, as well as handcrafted goods such as ceramics, wooden objects, and hand-blown glass baubles. A signature highlight is the mulled white wine simmered in a large cauldron by local winegrowers — a unique Obernai tradition.
Stalls scattered around the Belfry, right across from Place du Marché, next to the tourist information office and city hall. Features an airy square lined with stalls and seating for mulled wine.
Children's area (Place des Enfants) with a carousel, toy train, and a chalet model of Santa's workshop. Also features Santa's mailbox where children can drop letters to Father Christmas. Offers waffles, crepes, and vin chaud.
Main square location, the largest part of the market featuring a carousel, mini Christmas village, and stalls selling roasted chestnuts, vin chaud, chocolates, and local Alsatian products. The Belfry is illuminated with a special Christmas projection after dark.
Located at the ramparts of the city near the free parking area. A smaller cluster of stalls organized around a festive centerpiece, offering local sausages, biscuits, glass baubles, and artisanal candles.
