At the Flachsmarkt, costumed vendors hawk their wares with period-appropriate flair, while city guards in iron armor keep a watchful eye over the festive bustle. Torches illuminate the darkening winter evenings, and the air is thick with the scent of roasted meats, spiced cherry beer (Kirschbier), and warm mulled wine. The entire Essen Christmas Market operates under strong sustainability principles — powered exclusively by green electricity, using only reusable dishware, and maintaining a strict ban on plastic bags.
