Walkthrough video of the Christmas Market in front of St. Stephen's Cathedral in Passau, Germany. We lament the good times we had during our Christmas Markets Cruise with Viking, and take our final walk back to the Viking Tor :( Well, final for now...
Passau's history stretches back over two millennia to its origins as a Roman settlement called Castra Batava, strategically positioned where three rivers meet. During the Middle Ages, the city flourished as the seat of a powerful prince-bishopric, controlling vast territories and the lucrative salt trade along the Danube. This wealth is reflected in the grand baroque architecture that defines the city today, much of it rebuilt after a devastating fire in 1662 under the direction of Italian master builders. The bishops' influence extended far beyond the city walls, making Passau an important center of religious and political power in southern Germany for centuries.
Christmas markets have been central to Passau's identity since medieval times, when merchants gathered along the Danube to exchange goods before winter halted river traffic. These trading fairs evolved into festive seasonal celebrations combining commerce with local customs. Today's markets continue this heritage, spreading across atmospheric locations throughout the old town, including the cathedral square and riverfront.
