Plan Your Visit to Aosta

Getting There

Aosta is most easily reached by car via the A5 motorway, which connects it to Turin in roughly an hour and a half. The route passes through the Mont Blanc and Gran San Bernardo tunnel corridors, linking France and Switzerland. The nearest major airport is Turin Caselle, offering domestic and European connections. Regional train services also connect Turin and Aosta, providing an accessible alternative for those arriving without a car.

Where to Stay

The compact historic centre is the most convenient base, placing guests within easy walking distance of Roman monuments, main piazzas, and local markets. A range of hotels, guesthouses, and mountain-style residences are available throughout the old town at various price points.

Other Attractions

Aosta is often called the 'Rome of the Alps' for its remarkably well-preserved Roman monuments, including a triumphal arch dedicated to Augustus, a Roman theatre, and sections of ancient city walls. The Collegiate Church of Sant'Orso features a Romanesque cloister with intricately carved capitals, representing some of the finest medieval religious architecture in the region. The surrounding Aosta Valley offers dramatic alpine scenery and access to some of Europe's highest peaks, making it an excellent base for mountain walks and winter excursions. Local cuisine centres on fontina cheese, cured meats, and hearty mountain stews, best experienced in the valley's traditional osterie.

History & Culture

Founded as Augusta Praetoria Salassorum by the Romans around 25 BC, Aosta served as a strategic military outpost guarding the alpine passes into Gaul. The city's Roman grid plan, gates, and monuments have survived with unusual completeness, giving the modern town a distinctive layered character. Through the medieval period, Aosta became an important ecclesiastical and trading centre, reinforced by its position on pilgrimage and merchant routes. The Aosta Valley later developed its own identity under the House of Savoy, preserving a Franco-Provençal linguistic tradition that endures in parts of the region today. Winter has always shaped life here, with the alpine calendar driven by snow, livestock, and mountain passes. The city's winter market tradition reflects the valley's long history of artisan craft and alpine commerce, showcasing local woodwork, textiles, cheeses, and regional specialities against the backdrop of Roman and medieval architecture.
