Getting There

Asti is well connected by rail, with regular train services from Turin and Genoa. The nearest major international airport is Turin Caselle, approximately one hour away by road or a combination of rail and shuttle. The town is also accessible by car via the A21 motorway, which links Turin and Piacenza.

Where to Stay

The historic center, clustered around Piazza Alfieri and the main corso, places visitors within easy walking distance of the town's key sights. Asti is compact enough that centrally located hotels or agriturismi on the town's edge offer convenient access without requiring a car during a short stay.

Other Attractions

Asti's medieval towers and Romanesque churches create a distinctive skyline, with the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta standing as one of Piedmont's finest Gothic structures. The town is renowned as the capital of Moscato d'Asti and Asti Spumante, with wine cellars throughout the area offering tastings. Local cuisine reflects Piedmontese tradition, featuring tajarin pasta, roasted meats, and seasonal white truffles from the nearby Langhe hills. The surrounding Monferrato and Langhe wine regions, both UNESCO-listed landscapes, are ideal for short excursions into rolling countryside.

History & Culture

Asti's origins stretch back to Roman times, when it was established as Hasta, a strategically positioned settlement in the Po Valley. Through the medieval period, the city flourished as an independent commune and significant banking and trading hub, its prosperity reflected in the tall stone towers that still punctuate the skyline. The city is the birthplace of playwright Vittorio Alfieri, one of Italy's most celebrated literary figures, honored in the central piazza bearing his name. Asti is perhaps best known internationally for the Palio di Asti, one of Italy's oldest horse races, documented since the thirteenth century and remaining a defining expression of civic pride and medieval pageantry.
