The Sterzinger Glockenweihnacht — Sterzing Bell Christmas Market — is one of South Tyrol's five certified 'Original' Christmas markets, set against the backdrop of a beautifully preserved late-medieval old town in Vipiteno (Sterzing), Italy's northernmost city at nearly 1,000 meters elevation. The market's defining theme is bells: in 2020, a 25-bell carillon was installed atop the iconic Zwölferturm (Tower of the Twelve), a landmark tower dating to around 1470 that majestically overlooks the Stadtplatz (Town Square). The carillon plays automatically Monday through Friday at 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., while live carillon performances take place on weekends, filling the snowy alpine streets with festive sound. Visitors can follow the 'Bell Street' thematic route through historic alleys, explore a small farm-bell museum, and participate in hands-on craft workshops. The weekly program is rich: free guided walking tours run Tuesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 2:30 p.m.; torchlight walks through the old town take place every Tuesday evening from early December; and tower visits to the Zwölferturm are offered on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Special events include handbell concerts, processions with angels and shepherds, and a lively New Year's Eve celebration with live music at the Town Square until 2:00 a.m. Market stalls are open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., with food and beverage stalls staying open until 8:45 p.m. on weekdays and 10:00 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Traditional South Tyrolean products — speck, mulled wine, handmade wooden decorations, and freshly baked pastries — make this alpine market a deeply authentic and atmospheric holiday experience. Arrive on a weekend to catch a live carillon performance and a guided town walk for the full Glockenweihnacht experience.
