Plan Your Visit to Funchal

Getting There

Funchal is served by Madeira Airport, located east of the city centre, with direct flights from major European cities year-round. As Madeira is an Atlantic island, flying is the primary way to reach the city. Ferry services connect Funchal to other Atlantic islands, though air travel remains most practical for most visitors.

Where to Stay

The seafront Lido district and the Hotel Zone along the western waterfront provide convenient access to the city's main attractions and are well served by taxis and local buses. Staying in or near the city centre places visitors within walking distance of the principal squares and the Old Town, where most activity is concentrated.

Other Attractions

The historic Zona Velha, or Old Town, features painted doorways, traditional restaurants, and the Mercado dos Lavradores, a covered market filled with tropical fruits, flowers, and local produce. The Monte Palace Tropical Garden, accessible by cable car from the seafront, offers sweeping views over the city and harbour. Funchal's cathedral, the Sé, is one of the island's oldest buildings and showcases a beautifully carved Manueline interior. The wicker toboggan ride from Monte descending to the city remains a popular tradition for visitors.

History & Culture

Funchal was founded by Portuguese settlers in the fifteenth century, shortly after Madeira's discovery around 1419, and takes its name from the wild fennel—funcho—that once grew across the hillsides. It developed into a prosperous trading port, exporting Madeira wine and sugar to Europe, with architecture reflecting the wealth of those early centuries. The city's mild Atlantic climate means the festive season carries a distinctive warmth rarely found in European destinations. Funchal is celebrated for its spectacular New Year's Eve fireworks display, which has earned international recognition as one of the world's most impressive. The festive period blends Catholic tradition with local customs passed down through generations of Madeiran families.
