Plan Your Visit to Lausanne

Getting There

Lausanne is well connected by rail, with direct trains from Geneva Airport (approximately 45 minutes) and Zurich Airport (around 2.5 hours). The main station, Lausanne Gare, sits at the heart of Switzerland's rail network with frequent connections to major European cities. Visitors arriving by car can reach Lausanne via the A1 motorway along Lake Geneva's northern shore.

Where to Stay

The city center near Place St-François and the Flon district provides access to shopping and dining, with accommodation ranging from boutique hotels to international chains. The lakeside Ouchy neighborhood offers a quieter atmosphere with views and convenient metro connections to the upper town. Staying near the main train station ensures excellent transport links while remaining within walking distance of the old town.

Other Attractions

The Olympic Museum celebrates Lausanne's role as home of the International Olympic Committee, featuring interactive exhibits overlooking the lake. The medieval old town, perched on three hills, centers on the Gothic Cathedral of Notre-Dame with charming cobblestone streets best explored on foot. The lakefront Ouchy district offers scenic promenades, Belle Époque architecture, and ferry connections across Lake Geneva to French towns like Évian. The Collection de l'Art Brut showcases outsider art in a distinctive museum setting. Nearby Lavaux's UNESCO-listed vineyard terraces provide stunning landscapes and wine-tasting opportunities.

History & Culture

Lausanne's history stretches back to Roman times as the military camp Lousonna along important trade routes. The city gained prominence in the medieval period as a bishopric, with its cathedral consecrated in 1275 in the presence of Pope Gregory X and Emperor Rudolf I of Habsburg. After the Reformation in the 16th century, Lausanne became part of the Canton of Vaud under Bernese rule, developing into an important cultural and educational center. The city's fortunes rose in the 19th century as it became a fashionable destination for European aristocracy and intellectuals, drawn by its mild climate and lakeside setting. In 1915, Lausanne was chosen as headquarters of the International Olympic Committee, cementing its reputation as the Olympic Capital. The city's character reflects its blend of French-speaking Swiss culture, academic heritage from the University of Lausanne, and cosmopolitan influence shaped by international organizations.
