Zürich is full of beautiful Christmas markets! There are so many, that you would need a whole afternoon to explore them all. The first market that you need to visit is the Weihnachtsdorf at the Sechseläuten square near Bellevue. It’s a yearly market with a festive lighting decoration and plenty of stalls. The market is quite foodie, so consider going there for dinner. There are smaller markets just nearby, for example just at the Grossmünster and then inside the Niederdörfli, the old city of Zür

Getting There

Zurich Airport, Switzerland's largest international hub, lies approximately 10 kilometers north of the city center with frequent train connections reaching the main station in under 15 minutes. The city serves as a major European rail crossroads with excellent connections to Germany, Austria, Italy, and France. Visitors arriving by car will find well-maintained motorways converging on the city, though parking in the center can be limited during peak periods.

Where to Stay

The Altstadt and areas around the main train station place visitors within easy walking distance of primary attractions and offer the most atmospheric setting. The Seefeld district near the lake provides a quieter residential feel while remaining well-connected by tram. Zurich's efficient public transport system means most neighborhoods offer convenient access to the city center.

The cobblestoned Altstadt, or Old Town, spreads across both banks of the Limmat River, offering medieval guild houses, the twin towers of Grossmünster church, and the elegant Fraumünster with its Chagall windows. Zurich's origins stretch back to Roman times when it served as a customs post called Turicum, though Celtic settlements preceded that era. Its strategic position at the northwestern tip of Lake Zurich made it a natural trading hub, and the establishment of guilds shaped its economic and political structure for centuries.
