Edinburgh's story begins with its castle rock, fortified since the Iron Age and serving as a royal residence for centuries. The medieval Old Town grew along the ridge leading from the castle, its narrow wynds and towering tenements earning it the nickname Auld Reekie. In the 18th century, the planned New Town expanded northward in elegant Georgian style, creating the architectural contrast that defines the city today. This dual heritage earned Edinburgh its UNESCO World Heritage status and shaped its identity as Scotland's capital of culture, law, and learning.
Christmas Market History: Edinburgh's organized Christmas market tradition took root in the 1990s as part of a broader European trend, though the city's Hogmanay celebrations have much deeper roots in Scottish winter customs. The markets grew significantly in the early 2000s, transforming Princes Street Gardens and surrounding areas into a major festive destination. The Scottish tradition of welcoming the New Year has blended with Continental market culture to create a distinctive winter celebration that honors both local heritage and European festive traditions.
