The Wolfgangseer Advent in St. Wolfgang is a uniquely immersive Christmas market experience that unfolds across an entire lakeside village rather than a single square, making it one of Austria's most atmospheric Advent celebrations. Running from late November through late December along the shores of Lake Wolfgangsee, the market has been enchanting visitors since 2003 with its extraordinary blend of tradition, natural beauty, and festive spectacle. The market's most iconic landmark is the 16-meter-high floating Peace Light lantern anchored on the lake in front of the village, casting a warm glow across the water and serving as a symbol of reflection during the Advent season. Winding through the village, a lantern-lit street guides visitors past the remarkable Salzkammergut Nativity scene, featuring more than 70 life-size figures scattered throughout the parish garden and surrounding areas. Traditional Weisenbläser brass musicians provide a festive soundtrack as you browse stalls offering handmade crafts and regional culinary specialties. The Wolfgangseer Advent is part of a broader three-village celebration connecting St. Wolfgang, St. Gilgen, and Strobl via the scenic Lake Wolfgangsee ferry service. From St. Wolfgang, visitors can board the Advent Train on the historic Schafberg Railway, which runs Thursday through Sunday up to Schafbergalm at 1,364 meters above sea level through snow-dusted mountain forests. Special lantern boat cruises depart from St. Wolfgang Markt on Wednesdays at 16:15 and 17:15, featuring live music and storytelling on the water. The market is open Wednesday through Sunday, with entry completely free of charge, and is easily reached from Salzburg via the 150 bus to St. Gilgen followed by the lake ferry to St. Wolfgang.
