Plan Your Visit to Český Krumlov

Getting There

Most visitors arrive via Prague, approximately 170 kilometers north. Direct bus services take around three hours, while rental cars offer flexibility along well-maintained highways. Václav Havel Airport Prague serves as the primary international gateway, with onward transportation to Český Krumlov. Regional trains connect through České Budějovice, though bus services are generally more frequent and convenient.

Where to Stay

The compact historic center, encircled by the Vltava River, places nearly all accommodations within walking distance of the main square. Small family-run guesthouses and converted Renaissance buildings offer intimate lodging with period character, while larger hotels provide modern amenities just outside the pedestrian core. Advance booking is recommended, particularly during peak seasons.

Other Attractions

The UNESCO-listed Old Town centers on Český Krumlov Castle, a sprawling complex featuring Renaissance and Baroque architecture, tower views, and preserved interiors. Winding medieval streets reveal Gothic and Renaissance facades, artisan workshops, and traditional Czech taverns. The Egon Schiele Art Centrum showcases works by the Austrian expressionist who lived here, while the Marionette Museum celebrates the region's puppet theater heritage. Nearby Šumava National Park offers forest walks and access to quiet villages.

History & Culture

Český Krumlov's origins trace to the thirteenth century, when the Rosenberg family established a Gothic fortress above a dramatic bend in the Vltava River. Over subsequent centuries, Italian architects reshaped the castle in Renaissance style, followed by Baroque embellishments in the seventeenth century. The Schwarzenberg dynasty later presided over the estate, preserving much of the medieval urban fabric. Communist-era neglect paradoxically protected the town from modern development. After 1989, careful restoration returned Český Krumlov to its former splendor, earning UNESCO World Heritage status in 1992. Today, its cobbled lanes, painted facades, and castle silhouette evoke centuries past, particularly striking under winter snow and candlelight. The town's Christmas market tradition emerged in the post-communist era as part of its cultural revival, drawing on regional craft heritage including woodcarving, glassblowing, and seasonal baking. Its intimate scale and castle backdrop distinguish it among Czech markets, emphasizing local artisanship.
