Liberec's beloved Christmas market transforms the North Bohemian city beneath iconic Ještěd Mountain into a festive wonderland each Advent season, spreading across two connected squares in the city center. The main market at Dr. Edvard Beneš Square, in front of the historic Town Hall, runs from late November through December 23rd, while a second market at Cloth Square opens a couple of days earlier, giving visitors twice the holiday atmosphere to explore. Around 40 traditional market stalls — styled in the manner of historic Wallenstein houses — line the squares, offering regional specialties, handmade crafts, and warm seasonal refreshments including mulled wine and grilled sausages. A charming festive mini-train connects the two market locations on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, making it easy and fun to hop between them. The centerpiece of the main square is a beautifully decorated Advent Christmas tree adorned with Herrnhut stars and light garlands, ceremonially lit in late November. The market's cultural programme is a highlight in its own right. Fiala's famous mechanical nativity scene enchants visitors in early December, followed by an Ice Nativity Scene near the Christmas tree in the second half of the season. A 25-metre Advent observation wheel offers panoramic views over the festively lit city. The Town Hall building itself hosts the popular 'Christmas Through Children's Eyes' exhibition throughout the season. For those looking to extend their visit, the nearby Liebieg Palace hosts its own separate Advent programme with a Wishing Tree in its courtyard. Plan to arrive on a weekend to catch the mini-train ride and take full advantage of the cultural programme concentrated around Dr. Edvard Beneš Square.
