Experience Jul i Den Gamle By

Jul i Den Gamle By (Christmas at The Old Town) transforms Aarhus's beloved open-air living museum into an immersive journey through 400 years of Danish Christmas traditions, making it one of the most distinctive holiday experiences in Scandinavia. Unlike conventional Christmas markets, this event uses Den Gamle By's authentically preserved historic streetscapes as a living backdrop, inviting visitors to step inside decorated homes and shops spanning eras from the 1600s through the 20th century. Following the lantern-lit Christmas Route, guests discover how Danes have celebrated the season across the centuries — from the cobblestoned 1864 quarter to later historical neighborhoods. Costumed townspeople including postmen, kitchen maids, and barrel-organ players bring the streets to life with stories of Christmas past. Children can explore the magical Nisseloft (Elf Loft), where enchanted furniture transforms young visitors into tiny elves, or venture into the whimsical Koglekjøbing, a fantasy village for those who believe in elves. Food stalls serve traditional Danish Christmas fare including æbleskiver (round pancakes) made from a recipe dating to 1616, wild boar sausages, duck and roast pork sandwiches, honey hearts, and warm glögg or Den Gamle By's own Christmas brew. The market square features a grand Christmas tree, craft stalls selling handmade goods, and a dedicated Christmas shop offering hand-blown glass ornaments sourced from small family businesses in Thuringia, Germany, and Bramming's classic climbing elves. Brass bands from the Music Conservatory perform every Saturday, Sunday, and select December dates. The market is open daily — including December 24th and 31st — and admission is free for all visitors under 18. Weekday visits are recommended to avoid the popular weekend crowds.
