Plan Your Visit to Bordeaux

Getting There

Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport is located approximately twelve kilometers west of the city center, with direct connections to major European cities. The city is a major hub on France's high-speed rail network, with frequent TGV services from Paris taking around two hours, plus connections from Lyon, Toulouse, and other regional centers. Bordeaux is well-connected by motorway via the A10 and A62.

Where to Stay

The historic center, particularly around the Golden Triangle and Quinconces areas, offers easy walking access to major attractions and shopping. The Chartrons neighborhood to the north provides a quieter setting with charming boutiques and wine bars while maintaining good access to the city center. Accommodations range from boutique hotels in restored townhouses to modern options near the train station.

Other Attractions

Bordeaux's UNESCO-listed historic center features elegant eighteenth-century architecture, notably around the Place de la Bourse and the waterfront promenade. The Cité du Vin is a striking contemporary museum dedicated to wine culture with immersive exhibitions and tastings. Art lovers can visit the Musée des Beaux-Arts and the CAPC Museum of Contemporary Art. The nearby vineyards of Saint-Émilion and Médoc make excellent day trips for wine enthusiasts. The city's culinary scene centers on fresh oysters, canelés, and regional wines, best experienced in the lively Saint-Pierre district.

History & Culture

Bordeaux began as Burdigala in Roman times, developing into a prosperous port on the Garonne River. The city flourished during the Middle Ages under English rule, when the wine trade with Britain established its reputation as a wine capital. The eighteenth century brought extraordinary wealth through Atlantic commerce, transforming the cityscape with grand neoclassical facades and sweeping public squares that define its character today. This golden age created an architectural unity rare among European cities, earning Bordeaux World Heritage status. The city's maritime and mercantile traditions fostered a culture of public celebration that continues through its festivals and markets, blending centuries-old customs with contemporary French culture.
