Explore the magical atmosphere of Bordeaux's Christmas markets

Bordeaux began as Burdigala in Roman times, developing into a prosperous port on the Garonne River. The city flourished during the Middle Ages under English rule, when the wine trade with Britain established its reputation as a wine capital. The eighteenth century brought extraordinary wealth through Atlantic commerce, transforming the cityscape with grand neoclassical facades and sweeping public squares that define its character today. This golden age created an architectural unity rare among European cities, earning Bordeaux World Heritage status. The city's maritime and mercantile traditions fostered a culture of public celebration that continues through its festivals and markets, blending centuries-old customs with contemporary French culture.
