Christmas Markets in Sarlat-la-Caneda

Sarlat-la-Canéda traces its origins to a Benedictine abbey founded in the ninth century, around which a prosperous market town gradually grew. Its position in the Périgord Noir made it a significant center of trade and ecclesiastical life throughout the medieval period, flourishing particularly during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries despite the disruptions of the Hundred Years' War. The remarkable concentration of Gothic and Renaissance architecture that survives today is largely the result of a major restoration campaign launched in the 1960s under France's Malraux Act, which recognized Sarlat as an exceptional example of medieval urban heritage. The Périgord's deep culinary traditions—centered on duck, truffles, and foie gras—remain central to the town's identity and are celebrated throughout the year in local markets and restaurants.
