Getting There

Haguenau is easily reached via Strasbourg, approximately 30 kilometers to the south. Strasbourg Entzheim International Airport offers connections across Europe. Direct regional train services connect Strasbourg to Haguenau in under 30 minutes, making it a straightforward addition to any Alsatian itinerary. The city is also well connected by road through northern Alsace's regional highway network.

Where to Stay

The town center provides the most practical base, placing guests within easy walking distance of the historic core and main attractions. A range of hotels and guesthouses cater to different budgets, while those seeking more character may find charming options in the surrounding Alsatian villages a short drive away.

Other Attractions

The Musée Historique de Haguenau is one of Alsace's oldest municipal museums, with an impressive collection of archaeological finds and regional artifacts documenting the city's long history. The Musée Alsacien provides insight into local folk traditions and craftsmanship. The old town features a pleasing ensemble of half-timbered architecture, while the Moder River's banks offer a peaceful setting for walks. The Forêt de Haguenau, one of France's largest lowland forests, lies just beyond the city limits and is ideal for exploring the surrounding landscape.

History & Culture

Haguenau's origins trace to the early medieval period, when it developed around a Hohenstaufen imperial palace established in the twelfth century. Under Emperor Frederick Barbarossa, the town became an important seat of imperial power in the region. It later joined the Décapole, an alliance of ten Alsatian imperial cities that sought to preserve their autonomy during the late medieval era. The city's position along trade routes connecting France and the Germanic lands gave it a distinctly cross-cultural character that persists in its architecture and traditions. Centuries of shifting sovereignty have created a layered identity that feels authentically Alsatian—neither purely French nor German, but distinctly its own. Haguenau's Christmas market reflects deep Alsatian traditions of Advent celebrations that have flourished across the region for centuries, drawing on shared customs of craftsmanship, seasonal foods, and community gathering.
