The Marché de Noël de Montbéliard — officially branded as Les Lumières de Noël (Christmas Lights) — is one of France's most storied and celebrated Christmas markets, held annually since 1986 across Place Saint-Martin and the surrounding historic city center of Montbéliard in the Franche-Comté region of eastern France. Ranked among the top Christmas markets in Europe and consistently recognized as a leading market in France, it draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each Advent season with a combination of artisan craftsmanship, regional gastronomy, and breathtaking illuminations. At the heart of the event are approximately 170 carefully selected wooden chalets, with roughly two-thirds dedicated to artisan crafts and one-third to food and drink. Visitors stroll illuminated streets adorned with over 100,000 eco-responsible LED lights, a 100-meter luminous tunnel, and dramatic video mapping projected onto the façade of the Château des Ducs de Wurtemberg. Each evening at 17h, a ceremonial lighting transforms the city into a glowing winter wonderland. A beloved local tradition centers on the legendary figure of Tante Airie (Aunt Airie) and her donkey Marion, who embody the region's unique Christmas folklore.
