The Bamberger Weihnachtsmarkt transforms Maximiliansplatz in the heart of Bamberg's UNESCO World Heritage old town into a warmly lit, fragrant Christmas market each year from late November through December 23. Set against a backdrop of illuminated historic buildings and decorated streets stretching from Maximiliansplatz through the Grüner Markt, this authentic Franconian market offers a genuinely local atmosphere that distinguishes it from larger, more commercialized German Christmas markets. Around 50 wooden market stalls fill the square, where the scent of grilled bratwurst, roasted almonds, Lebkuchen, and Glühwein drifts through the cold winter air. A centerpiece of the market is the large Franconian half-timbered nativity scene, which depicts different scenes from the Christmas story as the weeks progress — a beloved tradition unique to Bamberg. An 11-meter-tall Christmas tree from the city forest towers festively over the square, and a rotating Christmas pyramid adds to the festive spectacle. Shoppers browse stalls offering handcrafted gifts, glass ornaments, toys, and decorations, with new additions each year such as Herrnhuter stars and specialty food vendors. The market opens Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. A free public transit initiative runs on all Advent Saturdays, making it easy to arrive without a car. Don't miss St. Nicholas Day on December 6, when the Nikolaus distributes chocolate treats to visitors throughout the market.
