The Kieler Weihnachtsdorf (Kiel Christmas Village) at Rathausplatz is a charming Nordic-inspired Christmas market that transforms Kiel's historic town hall square into a festive Scandinavian village each winter. Operating under the motto "Romantic. Nordic. Genuine.", this beloved market draws visitors with its cozy huts designed in traditional Scandinavian wooden house architecture, creating an authentic village atmosphere right in the heart of the city. With 36 vendor stalls filling the Rathausplatz, the market offers a warm and inviting setting for shopping, dining, and seasonal entertainment. One of its most beloved attractions is the Wichtelflug — a spectacular daily show in which a mini cog ship pulled by six reindeer flies over the market, accompanied by the storytelling elf Ki(e)lian, who explains why gifts in Kiel are delivered by ship rather than sleigh. The show runs three times daily at 15:00, 17:00, and 19:00. Children and families will also enjoy the historic carousel dating from 1900, a carillon with animated elf figures that parade on the hour, and fairytale storytelling sessions following the first Wichtelflug each day.
