Getting There

Konstanz is well connected by rail, with regular train services from Zurich, Stuttgart, and other major Swiss and German cities. Where to Stay

Accommodation in or near the Altstadt places visitors within easy walking distance of the historic core. The harbor and lakefront areas offer well-situated options with views of Lake Constance, combining convenience with atmosphere.

Other Attractions

The Konstanz Minster, a grand Romanesque and Gothic cathedral, dominates the old town skyline with notable architecture and panoramic tower views. The medieval Altstadt is among the best-preserved in the region, having escaped significant wartime damage and rewards exploration on foot. The Rosgarten Museum traces the city's long history, while the lakeside promenade along the Bodensee provides scenic views year-round. Day trips to the island of Mainau, known for its gardens, or the historic town of Meersburg across the lake are popular with visitors.

History & Culture

Konstanz is one of Germany's oldest cities, with roots stretching back to Roman settlement in the first centuries of the common era. Its position on the western tip of Lake Constance, straddling the German-Swiss border, gave it enduring strategic and commercial importance throughout the medieval period. The city is perhaps best known historically as the site of the Council of Konstanz, held between 1414 and 1418, a landmark event in Church history that drew thousands of clergy, nobles, and dignitaries from across Europe. Konstanz was spared destruction in the Second World War largely because of its proximity to neutral Switzerland, which is why its medieval streetscape and historic buildings survive in remarkable condition today. This well-preserved character gives the city an authentic atmosphere genuinely rooted in its past.
