The Weihnachtsmarkt am Rathaus is Lüneburg's premier Christmas market, set against the breathtaking backdrop of the city's medieval Rathaus (Town Hall) on the historic Marktplatz. Organized by Lüneburg Marketing GmbH, this beloved market transforms one of northern Germany's most picturesque squares into a glittering winter wonderland each year from late November through December 30th. The market's most cherished tradition is its daily trumpeter performance: each afternoon at 4:45 PM, a musician steps onto the Town Hall balcony and fills the entire square with festive melodies — a moment that captures the magic of the season unlike anything else. Families will find plenty to enjoy, from carousel rides for the little ones to a candle-making workshop where children can craft their own wax creations. Santa Claus makes a daily appearance from 5:00 to 6:00 PM, delighting young visitors. Shoppers can browse stalls offering distinctive local crafts, including hand-carved wooden decorations, hand-dipped wax candles, and the uniquely regional Lüneburg salt stone lamps — a specialty tied to the city's centuries-old salt-mining heritage. The air is thick with the scent of mulled wine (Glühwein), gingerbread (Lebkuchen), and roasted almonds, making every visit a sensory treat. The market also features a special edition Lüneburg Christmas mug designed by local artist Jana Blumenhagen, a collectible keepsake for returning visitors. Special Advent Sunday concerts add a cultural dimension, with performances ranging from brass ensembles to the city orchestra. Note that the market is closed on December 24th and 25th but reopens on December 26th, with adjusted hours on December 30th.
