The Meißner Weihnacht transforms Meißen's historic Marktplatz into a enchanting Christmas wonderland each year, distinguished by one of Germany's most beloved advent calendar traditions — the town hall itself becomes a giant advent calendar, with a fairy-tale window opening daily throughout December. Set against the backdrop of Meißen's medieval old town, this intimate yet charming Christmas market draws visitors seeking an authentic Saxon holiday experience away from the crowds of larger German markets. Spanning more than 40 festively decorated stalls, the Meißner Weihnacht showcases the rich craft heritage of the region. Shoppers browse intricate woodcarvings from the Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge), hand-crafted Christmas ornaments, candles, traditional Pflaumentoffel (plum people figurines), and locally made pottery. The market runs from late November through December 24, with extended hours on Fridays and Saturdays until 9 p.m. A Wintermarkt follows immediately after Christmas, running through New Year's Day. Families are especially well catered for: Santa Claus visits every Saturday and Sunday from late November at around 4:30 p.m., and on Christmas Eve from 11:30 a.m. Weekend craft workshops for children include ceramic making at Keralind (Kleinmarkt 1), bead crafting with the Perlenfischerin (Fleischergasse 13), and gift-making sessions at the 3H-Laden on Elbstraße 8. The advent calendar lottery, with tickets at just €2, adds a daily element of excitement for all ages, with proceeds supporting local charitable causes. For the full experience, arrive on a weekend evening to catch the magical window-opening ceremony at the Rathaus and pick up the market's signature collectible Glühwein mug, a new design released each year.
