Getting There

Naples is served by Naples International Airport (Capodichino), with direct flights from major European cities and convenient connections to the city centre by bus or taxi. The city benefits from Italy's high-speed rail network, with frequent services from Rome taking approximately one hour. By road, Naples sits along major motorways connecting it to Rome to the north and the Amalfi Coast to the south.

Where to Stay

Staying in the historic centre places visitors within easy reach of cultural landmarks and street life, particularly around Piazza del Plebiscito and the Spaccanapoli district. The waterfront Chiaia neighbourhood offers a more refined atmosphere with good transport links, while the area around Naples Central Station suits those arriving by train and prioritising convenience.

Other Attractions

Naples is home to the National Archaeological Museum, one of the world's finest collections of Greco-Roman antiquities, including treasures recovered from Pompeii and Herculaneum. The historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, rewards exploration with its medieval churches, Baroque palaces, and artisan workshops. The city's culinary identity is inseparable from its character — Naples is widely regarded as the birthplace of pizza, and its street food culture is among the most vibrant in Europe. Day trips to Pompeii, the Amalfi Coast, or the island of Capri are easily arranged.

History & Culture

Naples traces its origins to a Greek settlement known as Neapolis, meaning 'new city,' founded around the fifth century BC. It grew into one of the most important cities of the ancient Mediterranean world and later became a prosperous capital under successive rulers — Norman, Hohenstaufen, Angevin, and Aragonese — each leaving a distinct architectural and cultural imprint. The city flourished as the capital of the Kingdom of Naples for centuries, accumulating a rich legacy of art, music, and civic tradition that still defines its identity today. Naples has one of Italy's most distinctive Christmas traditions centred on the craft of presepe, or nativity scene construction. Via San Gregorio Armeno has been associated with nativity artisans for centuries, and during Advent it transforms into a celebrated market where craftspeople display elaborately detailed figures and scenes. This tradition dates back at least to the eighteenth century, when the Neapolitan presepe reached an artistic peak and became a revered cultural expression.
