Getting There

Røros is accessible by train from Oslo and Trondheim via the scenic Røros Line, which winds through the Norwegian highlands. A regional airport serves the town with connections to Oslo for international visitors. Driving through the mountain landscape is also popular, particularly for those exploring the broader Trondheim region.

Where to Stay

The compact historic center places visitors within walking distance of main sights. Accommodation ranges from charming guesthouses in traditional wooden buildings to modern lodgings on the town's edges, all offering convenient access to central Røros.

Other Attractions

The Røros Museum, centered on the historic smelting works at Smelthytta, documents the town's copper mining heritage. The UNESCO-listed wooden townscape features distinctive ochre and timber buildings lining cobblestone streets that retain their 18th-century character. Røros Church, a baroque landmark from the mid-1700s, stands as an architectural centerpiece. The surrounding wilderness offers cross-country skiing, dog sledding, and winter activities.

History & Culture

Røros was founded in the mid-17th century following the discovery of copper deposits in the surrounding mountains. The mining industry shaped the town for over three hundred years, with distinctive log and timber buildings painted in earthy tones reflecting the practical design needed for harsh Nordic winters. In 1980, Røros was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in recognition of its exceptionally well-preserved industrial and urban heritage.

The closure of the copper works in 1977 marked the end of the mining era, but the town has since reinvented itself as a cultural destination while maintaining its historic character. The Røros Christmas market, known as Rørosmartnan, has roots in a centuries-old winter trading tradition when merchants, farmers, and Sami reindeer herders gathered during the coldest months. This annual winter fair became a vital social and commercial event for the isolated mountain community. Today the market continues that tradition, blending historical atmosphere with craft vendors, local food producers, and reindeer on snow-covered streets.
