Julemarkedet i Trondheim transforms the city's central square, Torvet, into a festive winter wonderland each December, drawing visitors with an authentic blend of Norwegian tradition, local craftsmanship, and lively cultural programming. First launched in 2003 with just five stalls, the Trondheim Christmas Market has grown into one of Norway's most beloved seasonal events, now hosting over 80 exhibitors and more than 200 concerts, theatrical performances, and cultural events throughout its run. At the heart of the market stands the iconic Lavvo — a grand traditional tent seating over 500 guests — where open fires burn all day, benches are draped in reindeer hides, and troubadours perform live music on stage daily. The Lavvo's extended hours every Thursday and Friday until 10 PM make it a perfect evening destination. The menu inside leans into regional Norwegian flavors: freshly grilled reindeer burgers, bacalao, local craft brews, and seasonal specialties sourced from Trøndelag producers. Beyond the Lavvo, the market stalls offer a curated mix of genuinely handcrafted goods — from silver and enamel jewelry featuring iconic Trondheim rose motifs to hand-blown glass, hand-knitted woolens, and artisan marzipan. A Ferris wheel adds a playful touch, offering elevated views over the illuminated square. The market also celebrates Trondheim's famous "blue hour," when the low winter light bathes the entire scene in a soft, magical glow that feels straight out of a Norwegian fairy tale. Arrive on a Thursday or Friday evening to enjoy the Lavvo's extended atmosphere and catch a live performance under the warm glow of the fire.
