Getting There

Uppsala is located about 70 kilometres north of Stockholm and is easily accessible by frequent direct trains from Stockholm Central Station in under an hour. Arlanda Airport, Sweden's largest international hub, offers direct rail connections to Uppsala. Travellers arriving by car can reach the city via the E4 motorway, one of Sweden's main north-south routes.

Where to Stay

The city centre, clustered around the cathedral and the Fyris River, places visitors within easy walking distance of the main squares and historic streets. A range of hotels and guesthouses in the central district suit different budgets, and the compact nature of Uppsala means that most central accommodation keeps key areas comfortably accessible on foot.

Other Attractions

Uppsala Cathedral, the largest church in Scandinavia, dominates the city skyline and houses the tombs of Swedish royalty and the botanist Carl Linnaeus. Uppsala University, founded in 1477 and one of Northern Europe's oldest institutions, lends the city a scholarly atmosphere. The university's Gustavianum museum displays notable collections including an anatomical theatre. The Linnaeus Garden, restored to its 18th-century layout, offers a peaceful retreat. The medieval Uppsala Castle, set on a hill above the city, provides sweeping views and hosts cultural exhibitions.

History & Culture

Uppsala is one of Sweden's oldest and most historically significant cities, serving for centuries as the country's religious and academic capital. The archbishopric of Uppsala has been the seat of the Church of Sweden since the medieval period, and the cathedral remains a powerful symbol of that ecclesiastical heritage. Long before Christianity, the area around Uppsala was a major centre of Norse religious life. Gamla Uppsala, just a few kilometres from the modern city, was home to a pagan temple and royal burial mounds that still draw visitors today. This layered history—spanning pre-Christian ritual, medieval scholarship, and Reformation-era church authority—gives Uppsala a cultural depth that few Swedish cities can match. The city's Christmas market tradition draws on these deep roots, with seasonal celebrations tied to the university calendar and the cathedral's liturgical year. Markets and winter gatherings in the city centre reflect both Swedish Advent customs and the lively student culture that has always shaped Uppsala's character.
