Getting There

Sigtuna is conveniently located between Stockholm and Uppsala. Visitors can reach the town by bus from Stockholm Arlanda Airport or by taking the commuter train to Märsta and transferring to a local bus for the final connection. The journey from Stockholm city centre typically involves commuter rail north with a transfer at Märsta.

Where to Stay

Given Sigtuna's compact size, most accommodation in the town centre places visitors within easy walking distance of its historic streets. A selection of boutique guesthouses and manor-style hotels in and around the old town offer characterful bases for exploring the medieval core.

Other Attractions

Sigtuna's medieval main street, Stora Gatan, is among Sweden's oldest and features charming wooden buildings, boutiques, and traditional cafés. The ruins of several Romanesque stone churches, including St Olof and St Per, stand as reminders of the town's early Christian heritage. The Sigtuna Museum offers insight into the town's Viking-era origins and medieval development through local archaeological finds. The nearby shores of Lake Mälaren provide a scenic backdrop to the historic townscape.

History & Culture

Sigtuna is one of Sweden's oldest towns, founded around the late tenth century as an early centre of Christian missionary activity and royal power. It was among the first places in Sweden to mint coins, and its early importance is reflected in the concentration of runic stones and church ruins throughout the townscape. By the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, Sigtuna had developed into a significant urban settlement, though it was eventually overshadowed by Stockholm and Uppsala. Its small scale has preserved its medieval character, and the town retains an unhurried atmosphere rooted in its long history. The Advent period brings particular warmth to Sigtuna's intimate streets and candlelit windows, reflecting centuries of winter gatherings in this part of Sweden.
