Bergweihnacht

The Bergweihnacht (Mountain Christmas) at Wels's historic Stadtplatz is the centerpiece of the celebrated Welser Weihnachtswelt, a multi-venue Christmas festival that earned Wels the prestigious title of European City of Christmas 2026 — the first German-speaking city ever to receive this honor. Set against the backdrop of the illuminated Ledererturm tower, this romantic mountain hut village is crafted entirely from larch wood and is home to what is claimed to be the world's largest Christ Child figure, making it a truly one-of-a-kind destination in Austria. The market runs daily from mid-November through December 24, with stalls open from 11:00 to 21:00. Visitors stroll through atmospheric alpine-style lanes filled with the scent of mulled wine, roasted sausages, and fresh pastries. Regional artisans showcase handcrafted goods in wood, wool, ceramics, and more — with over 22 craft vendors rotating weekly, ensuring something new to discover on every visit. Live choirs and brass bands perform throughout the season, adding to the festive soundtrack. Children are especially well catered for: a miniature train winds through an enchanted forest — occasionally dusted with artificial snow — while the Ledererturm houses the Christ Child's heavenly cloud kingdom, complete with a Christmas post office where kids can drop off their wish lists. A grand Advent wreath with meter-high candles and a towering Christmas tree in front of the Rathaus complete the visual spectacle. Horse-drawn carriage rides through the illuminated old town depart from the Almdorfbühne stage for just €5 per person. Plan at least two hours to take in the full Stadtplatz experience.
