Explore the magical atmosphere of Veliko Tarnovo's Christmas markets
Veliko Tarnovo served as the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire from the twelfth to the fourteenth century, making it one of the most historically significant cities in the Balkans. At its height, the city was a major centre of Orthodox Christian culture, royal power, and medieval scholarship. The fortress of Tsarevets housed the royal palace and the Patriarchate, surrounded by churches, monasteries, and noble residences. The Ottoman conquest of 1393 brought this golden age to a close, though the city retained cultural importance through subsequent centuries. During the Bulgarian National Revival of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Veliko Tarnovo re-emerged as a hub of education, craftsmanship, and national identity. Bulgaria's first modern constitution was adopted here in 1879. This historical continuity gives the city particular significance, with the illuminated fortress and cobbled lanes evoking centuries of tradition.

Daniela Explores visits Veliko Tarnovo, Christmas lights and market. At the Christmas market, the sausages are sizzling, the mulled wine is warm. Winter gifts, hats scarves and socks, and shiny decorations to cheer up your home. A festive favourite, popular all year-round, is the palachinka—a thin pancake like a crêpe, with ancient roots stretching across Europe and back in time. And as a bonus I tell you about my grandmother recipe. Research and Sources: https://www.bgdnes.bg/bulgaria/articl
