Where to Stay

The old town area, clustered around Tsarevets Hill and the streets of Varosha, places visitors within easy walking distance of the city's main cultural sites. Guesthouses and small family-run hotels in this quarter offer atmospheric stone-and-timber interiors that reflect the city's character. Those preferring modern amenities will find additional options along the main boulevard, still within comfortable reach of the historic centre.

Other Attractions

The medieval fortress of Tsarevets, perched dramatically above the Yantra River gorge, is the city's defining landmark and offers sweeping views over the terracotta rooftops below. The historic Samovodska Charshia craftsmen's quarter preserves traditional workshops selling woodcarving, pottery, and handmade textiles, providing genuine insight into Bulgarian artisan heritage. The Church of the Forty Martyrs and the nearby Archaeological Museum offer deeper understanding of the city's layered past. The village of Arbanasi, a short drive away, features beautifully preserved Renaissance-era houses and richly frescoed churches.

History & Culture

Veliko Tarnovo served as the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire from the twelfth to the fourteenth century, making it one of the most historically significant cities in the Balkans. At its height, the city was a major centre of Orthodox Christian culture, royal power, and medieval scholarship. The fortress of Tsarevets housed the royal palace and the Patriarchate, surrounded by churches, monasteries, and noble residences. The Ottoman conquest of 1393 brought this golden age to a close, though the city retained cultural importance through subsequent centuries. During the Bulgarian National Revival of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Veliko Tarnovo re-emerged as a hub of education, craftsmanship, and national identity. Bulgaria's first modern constitution was adopted here in 1879. This historical continuity gives the city particular significance, with the illuminated fortress and cobbled lanes evoking centuries of tradition.
