The Historischer Weihnachtsmarkt Erlangen transports visitors back to the Middle Ages in one of Bavaria's most atmospheric and distinctive Christmas markets. Set around the historic Neustädter Kirche on Neustädter Kirchenplatz, the market immerses guests in a richly themed medieval world from late November through December 23rd each year. The market comes alive with daily entertainment featuring jugglers, stilt walkers, fire breathers, and live musicians performing everything from medieval folk music to blues and jazz. Fire shows — including a dedicated children's fire show — take place every evening, creating a dramatic and memorable spectacle. Roving performers known as Gaukler entertain crowds throughout the afternoon, while musical acts such as Spielleut Schandfleck, Orchestra Grandessa, and The Redemption Brothers fill the square with sound. Culinary offerings lean into the medieval theme with hearty specialties including Feuerzangenbowle (fire tongs punch), hot mead, berry wines, soup served in bread bowls, Lángos, grilled meats, freshly baked bread, and Eierkuchen (German pancakes). The aroma of roasted almonds and mulled wine drifts through the stalls, adding to the enchanting atmosphere. Shopping at the market reflects its historical character, with vendors offering medieval-inspired goods such as handcrafted candles, jewelry, musical instruments, furs, felted items, bows, and traditional games. The market is open Monday through Friday from 10:30 to 21:00, Saturday until 21:30, and Sunday from 11:00 to 21:00. For the most atmospheric experience, visit on a weekend evening when fire shows and live music performances are at their most vibrant.
