Voted 'Best Christmas Market in Germany' by European Best Destinations in 2024, the Trierer Weihnachtsmarkt at Hauptmarkt transforms Trier's medieval main square into a glittering winter wonderland each November and December. Set against the dramatic backdrop of Trier Cathedral — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and the ancient Hauptmarkt, this is Germany's oldest city at its most enchanting. The market spans the historic Hauptmarkt and the Domfreihof forecourt, where lovingly decorated wooden stalls offer artisan Christmas crafts, handmade ornaments, and regional specialties. A signature attraction found nowhere else in Germany is the Glühwein Queen, the official ambassador for the Moselle region's celebrated Winzer-Glühwein — a warming mulled wine crafted from local vineyard grapes. Families will find plenty to enjoy, from the beloved Puppenbühne Rheinland puppet theatre to carol-singing sessions hosted by the German Christmas Academy with renowned tenors. Children can craft their own Christmas tree decorations with local artist Roland Grundheber, while guided historical tours bring the rich story of Hauptmarkt and Germany's oldest bishop's church vividly to life. The atmospheric stage at Domfreihof hosts a rotating daily program of live music, folk performances, and theatrical shows throughout the season. The market runs Monday through Thursday from 11:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday until 10:00 p.m., and Sunday until 8:00 p.m. Entry is completely free. Plan to arrive on a weekday evening for a more relaxed experience of this extraordinary historic setting.
