Voted 'Best Christmas Market in Germany' by European Best Destinations in 2024, the Trierer Weihnachtsmarkt transforms Trier's ancient old town into a glittering winter wonderland each Advent season. Spread across two iconic locations — the medieval Hauptmarkt and the Domfreihof forecourt of Trier Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site — the market offers a setting unlike any other in Germany, where Roman history and festive tradition intertwine. Around 90 lovingly decorated wooden stalls fill the cobblestone squares with the scent of mulled wine, roasted nuts, and freshly baked treats. The market's most celebrated signature is the Original Moselle Winzer-Glühwein, a vintner's mulled wine sourced from the nearby Moselle wine region and championed by Germany's only Mulled Wine Queen — a beloved ambassador unique to Trier. Daily programming on the atmospheric stage in front of the cathedral's west façade keeps the whole family entertained, from the Puppenbühne Rheinland puppet theatre and the German Christmas Academy's carol-singing sessions to guided historical tours that bring the story of Germany's oldest city to life. Local artist Roland Grundheber invites children to craft their own Christmas tree ornaments, while the market's first-ever interactive Christmas fairytale performance adds a new theatrical dimension to the Domfreihof stage. The official opening concert features Trier's beloved dialect band Leiendecker Bloas. Admission is completely free, and the market runs Monday through Sunday with extended hours on Fridays and Saturdays. Plan to arrive early on weekdays to enjoy the stalls at a relaxed pace before evening crowds gather.
