Plan Your Visit to Amsterdam

Getting There

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, one of Europe's major hubs, lies 15 kilometers southwest of the city center with frequent train connections to Central Station in under 20 minutes. The city benefits from excellent international rail links to Paris, Brussels, Berlin, and other European capitals via high-speed services. Major motorways provide road access, though parking in the historic center is limited and expensive.

Where to Stay

The Canal Belt and Jordaan neighborhoods place visitors within walking distance of major attractions and offer abundant dining and shopping. Accommodations near Central Station provide excellent transport connections and quick access to the city's main squares. The Museum Quarter and De Pijp districts offer quieter, more residential settings while remaining centrally located.

Other Attractions

The Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, and Anne Frank House form the core of Amsterdam's cultural offerings. The concentric canal belt, a UNESCO World Heritage site, features narrow gabled houses and bridges ideal for walking exploration. The Jordaan district offers independent boutiques and galleries, while traditional brown cafés serve Dutch specialties. Day trips to Zaanse Schans with its historic windmills or the Bollenstreek flower fields provide variety to any visit.

History & Culture

Amsterdam began as a small fishing village in the late 12th century, growing around a dam built on the Amstel River. The city's Golden Age in the 17th century transformed it into one of the world's most important trading centers. Merchant wealth funded the elegant canal houses and cultural institutions that define the city today, establishing Amsterdam as a center of art, science, and religious tolerance that attracted thinkers and traders from across Europe.

Amsterdam's Christmas market tradition is relatively modern compared to older European counterparts. The Ice Village at Museumplein, established in the early 2000s, became a signature winter attraction combining skating with festive stalls. The city's seasonal markets reflect its multicultural character and contemporary design sensibility, featuring both traditional offerings and modern Dutch crafts.
