Explore the magical atmosphere of Hallstatt's Christmas markets

Hallstatt's history spans more than 7,000 years of continuous human settlement. The village gave its name to the Hallstatt culture, a major phase of early European civilization defined by its mastery of salt mining and trade during the late Bronze and early Iron Ages. Salt, historically known as white gold, was the engine of Hallstatt's prosperity for millennia, and the mines above the village remain a testament to that heritage. Perched between steep mountain cliffs and the Hallstätter See, the village developed its distinctive layered architecture out of necessity, with buildings clinging to narrow terraces above the water. By the medieval period, Hallstatt had become an established trading community, its lakeside character shaping a close-knit culture that persists today.
