The Liège Christmas Village is Belgium's oldest Christmas market, spanning the heart of the Cité Ardente from the Esplanade de l'Opéra all the way through Place St-Lambert and Place du Marché. With over 38 years of history and 1.5 million visitors annually from across Europe, this is no ordinary holiday market — it is a fully realized festive village complete with a mayor, aldermen, a post office, and honorary citizens who bring its wooden streets to life each December. The Esplanade de l'Opéra entrance, newly pedestrianized following tram construction, welcomes visitors with a classic carousel, a roasted chestnut cart, a gourmet chalet, and Santa's sleigh. A dedicated chalet showcasing German and Luxembourgish specialties anchors this gateway zone, while a beautifully decorated illuminated church houses a traditional Liège puppet nativity scene. Across the broader village, more than 200 timber stalls offer artisan crafts, local ceramics, jewelry, candles, and Christmas decorations alongside indulgent food and drink: mulled wine, pékèt (Liège's local gin), oysters, foie gras, marzipan, gingerbread, and flammekueche. The famous Christmas ice rink on Place de la Cathédrale runs through early January, and a towering Christmas Pyramid, a Ferris wheel, and a sledding hill round out the entertainment. Voted European Capital of Christmas in 2018, the Liège Christmas Village also partners with the Christmas Circus and Les Balins du Miroir for a full season of live concerts, DJ nights, folklore performances, and Latin dance evenings.
